2017 NBA Trades

The Nets acquired Jahlil Okafor; Nik Stauskas; 2019 second-round pick (#31, Nic Claxton) from 76ers in exchange for Trevor Booker.

Milwaukee acquired three seasons of high-level starting and All-Defensive production from Eric Bledsoe at a discounted price, while Phoenix salvaged a future first that later helped bring Aron Baynes and Ty Jerome.

Atlanta received veterans Richard Jefferson and Kay Felder along with cash and two second-round rights from Cleveland in October 2017. The Cavaliers obtained the draft rights to Sergiy Gladyr and Dimitrios Agravanis. The inherited Hawks Win grades Atlanta A- and Cleveland C-; immediate NBA on-court benefits were limited.

Atlanta received DeAndre Liggins and cash from the Clippers in September 2017 for a top-55-protected 2018 second-round selection that never conveyed. Liggins did not become a lasting Hawks rotation player, but Atlanta received certain cash while avoiding the loss of an actual pick. Hawks Win; Atlanta B- and Clippers F under the inherited grades.

New York turned an aging Carmelo Anthony with a restricted trade market into useful veterans and the pick that became Mitchell Robinson, while Oklahoma City received one uneven season before paying additional draft value to move Anthony again.

Phoenix Suns came out ahead in the 2017-09-22 trade with Memphis, which received 2018 second-round pick (protected top 55) (not exercised) for Troy Daniels; 2018 second-round pick (second least favorable of Grizzlies, Heat, Hornets picks) (#41-Jarred Vanderbilt).

Chicago received Quincy Pondexter, 2018 second round pick (#51-Tony Carr (Gregory)), cash for rights to Ater Majok and finished with a modest realized-value edge.

Boston obtained Kyrie Irving from Cleveland in August 2017, sending Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Žižić, a first-round pick eventually used on Collin Sexton and a second-round selection added to the final terms. Irving starred for Boston but remained just two years. Sexton developed as a productive Cavaliers guard, leaving meaningful value on both sides and a narrow canonical Celtics advantage.

The Nets acquired Allen Crabbe from Blazers in exchange for Andrew Nicholson.

Indiana captured the stronger realized return, led by Cory Joseph, in the 2017-07-14 transaction with Toronto Raptors.

The Nets acquired DeMarre Carroll; draft picks (first-round pick protected top 14 in 2018-23, else 2023 second-round pick and 2024 second-round pick) (2018 #29, Dzanan Musa); 2018 second-round pick (less favorable of Lakers, Magic picks) (#40, Rodions Kurucs) from Raptors in exchange for Justin Hamilton (Anthony).

Celtics Win. Boston Celtics earns B+; Detroit Pistons earns C+. Morris's ongoing contribution in Boston offers a stronger realized asset than the brief window associated with Detroit's

Dallas received Josh McRoberts; 2023 second-round pick (#50-Keyontae Johnson); $5.1M cash from Miami Heat and sent A.J. Hammons in return.

The Clippers acquired Danilo Gallinari in a July 6, 2017 three-team deal. Denver received the 2019 Washington-origin second-round selection via Atlanta, while the Hawks acquired Jamal Crawford, Diamond Stone, the protected 2018 Houston-origin first-round right and cash. The original slight Clippers edge grades Los Angeles A-, Atlanta B+ and Denver C. A prior Denver-only source view had omitted Atlanta's incoming package.

Indiana traded Paul George to Oklahoma City for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis, creating two exceptional asset chains that later reached Tyrese Haliburton on one side and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander plus extensive draft control on the other.

On July 6, 2017, Philadelphia sold the draft rights to No. 39 pick Jawun Evans to the Clippers for cash. Evans played 48 Clippers regular-season games in 2017-18, starting four and logging 778 minutes while averaging 4.8 points and 2.1 assists. Los Angeles waived him before the following season, so the two-year NBA appearances after that belong to other teams. Clippers Win, Los Angeles B-, Philadelphia C.

Milwaukee acquired No. 46 pick Sterling Brown's draft rights from Philadelphia for about $1.9 million in cash on July 6, 2017. Brown played three Bucks seasons, logging 54, 58 and 52 regular-season appearances from 2017-18 through 2019-20, 164 games in all, plus 15 postseason games. Bucks Win, Milwaukee A-, Philadelphia C. Brown's 164-game contribution outweighed Philadelphia's immediate cash return.

Minnesota acquired draft picks (first round pick protected top 14 in 2018-20, else 2020 second round pick and 2021 second round pick) (2018 #20-Josh Okogie) while sending out Ricky Rubio in the 2017-06-30 transaction with Jazz.

Dallas received cash considerations from Houston Rockets and sent Jarrod Uthoff in return.

Atlanta sent Ryan Kelly to Houston for cash on June 28, 2017. Kelly was not a lasting Rockets regular-season contributor. The Hawks obtained direct financial consideration and cleared a roster commitment, while Houston took a speculative look at a forward. The low-stakes exchange retains the canonical Even Trade and C+ grades.

Dallas received cash considerations from Houston Rockets and sent DeAndre Liggins in return.

Detroit acquired cash considerations from Houston Rockets for Darrun Hilliard.

Houston acquired Chris Paul for a deep Clippers package, creating a 65-win title contender, while Los Angeles converted an outgoing star into Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell and a successful bridge roster.

Houston sent cash to Portland on June 28, 2017 for guard Tim Quarterman, then waived him October 13 without a Rockets regular-season appearance. Quarterman briefly signed again with Houston in spring 2018 but still supplied no league game during the initial trade stint. Portland banked cash for a player who didn't fit its roster. Blazers Win, Portland C+ for a realized payment and Houston D+ for a nonproductive audition.

Houston acquired Shawn Long from Philadelphia on June 28, 2017, sending a 2018 second-round pick and $100,000 cash according to the NBA trade tracker and contemporary Rockets reporting. Long was waived September 26 without playing a Rockets regular-season game. The 2018 selection became No. 60 Kostas Antetokounmpo after later rights movement. Philadelphia received transferable compensation; Rockets received a short camp opportunity. 76ers Win, Philadelphia B- and Houston D+.

The Nets acquired D'Angelo Russell; Timofey Mozgov from Lakers in exchange for Brook Lopez; rights to Kyle Kuzma.

Charlotte acquired rights to Dwayne Bacon; $1.8M cash from New Orleans Pelicans for rights to Frank Jackson.

Chicago sent rights to Jordan Bell for $3.5M cash, and the outgoing package produced materially greater realized value.

Chicago received Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the rights to Lauri Markkanen for Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton, retaining more long-term talent while Minnesota gained the star who ended its fourteen-year playoff drought.

Denver received Trey Lyles; rights to Tyler Lydon from Utah Jazz, sending rights to Donovan Mitchell in return.

Chicago sent the draft rights to Oregon forward Jordan Bell, the No. 38 selection in the 2017 NBA draft, to Golden State for $3.5 million. Bell played 57 regular-season Warriors games as a rookie and 68 in 2018-19, contributing 1,597 total minutes and interior defense during two consecutive Finals runs, including the 2018 championship. Warriors Win, Golden State B+, Chicago C. Chicago received genuine cash but no roster help from this exchange.

The long-term result was ultimately favorable to Grizzlies: Houston received 2018 second-round pick (least favorable of Grizzlies, Heat, Hornets picks) (#46-De'Anthony Melton) from Memphis Grizzlies for rights to Dillon Brooks.

On June 22, 2017, Indiana paid New Orleans $1 million for the rights to second-round pick Edmond Sumner. The Xavier guard played 108 Pacers regular-season games across 2017-18 through 2020-21, including 29 starts, and averaged 7.5 points across 53 games in 2020-21. An Achilles injury interrupted the following season, and his later Nets games belong to Brooklyn. Pacers Win, Indiana B+, New Orleans C.

On June 22, 2017, Milwaukee sold the rights to No. 48 draft pick Sindarius Thornwell to the Clippers for about $2 million. Thornwell played 73 Clippers games as a rookie, scoring 282 points in 1,156 minutes, and another 64 games in 2018-19, totaling 137 appearances and 1,469 minutes in two years. Clippers Win, Los Angeles B, Milwaukee C+: the Bucks received cash, but the Clippers acquired a usable reserve.

Los Angeles Lakers captured a clear realized-value win in the 2017-06-22 transaction with Utah Jazz, receiving rights to Josh Hart; rights to Thomas Bryant for rights to Tony Bradley.

Orlando Magic clearly won the completed-value comparison; Memphis received rights to Ivan Rabb but surrendered 2019 second-round pick (#46-Talen Horton-Tucker).

At the June 22, 2017 draft, Philadelphia acquired the No. 25 draft rights to Latvian center Anžejs Pasečņiks from Orlando, sending a conditional 2020 first-round pick and a 2020 second-round pick. The assets eventually became No. 21 Tyrese Maxey and No. 47 Yam Madar, but Orlando did not keep the No. 21 pick until 2020: it returned to Philadelphia as part of the Markelle Fultz deal in 2019. Pasečņiks played no NBA games for the 76ers. Magic Win, Orlando A- for movable first/second rights and their leverage, Philadelphia D+.

On June 22, 2017, Portland acquired rights to Zach Collins from Sacramento Kings in exchange for rights to Justin Jackson (Aaron); rights to Harry Giles III.

New Orleans acquired 2017 second round pick (#52-Edmond Sumner) from Washington Wizards for Tim Frazier.

Charlotte traded Marco Belinelli, Miles Plumlee and the No. 41 pick to Atlanta for Dwight Howard and the No. 31 pick in June 2017. Howard started 81 Hornets games in 2017-18 and averaged a double-double, while Atlanta gained short-term wing shooting and center depth plus a second-rounder used on Tyler Dorsey. Hawks Win in the canonical record, Atlanta B+ and Charlotte C-.

Boston traded the No. 1 selection in the 2017 NBA Draft to Philadelphia for No. 3 and a protected future first. The Sixers selected Markelle Fultz; the Celtics selected Jayson Tatum and later received the pick used on Romeo Langford at No. 14 in 2019. Fultz played only 33 games for Philadelphia before a separate 2019 trade to Orlando, while Tatum became a central player in Boston's 2024 championship. Celtics Win, Boston A+, Philadelphia F.

Dallas received Nerlens Noel from Philadelphia 76ers and sent Andrew Bogut; Justin Anderson; conditional draft picks (2017 first-round pick protected top 18, else 2017 second-round pick, 2020 second-round pick (protected #56-60)) (2017 #39-Jawun Evans) (2020 #48-Nico Mannion) in return.

Denver acquired Roy Hibbert from Milwaukee for a top-55-protected 2019 second-round pick that became #57 Jordan Bone.

On February 23, 2017, the Lakers acquired Tyler Ennis and the draft rights to Australian wing Brad Newley from Houston for Marcelo Huertas. Ennis appeared in 22 Lakers games that spring and 54 more the following season, totaling 76 games and 1,075 minutes. Houston waived Huertas without a Rockets regular-season appearance. Newley never played in the NBA. Lakers Win, Los Angeles B and Houston D+.

The Rockets acquired Lou Williams from the Lakers on February 23, 2017, sending Corey Brewer and a first-round choice later used at No. 28 on Tony Bradley. Williams appeared in 23 Houston regular-season games, scoring 343 points in 591 minutes, plus the playoffs, before he was moved onward in a different multi-player transaction. The Nets acquired Andrew Nicholson; Marcus Thornton (Terrell); first-round pick (protected top 14 in 2017-21, top 10 in 2022, else 2022 second-round pick, 2023 second-round pick) (2017 #22, Jarrett Allen) from Wizards in exchange for Bojan Bogdanovic; Chris McCullough.

Atlanta acquired Ersan Ilyasova and an option involving 2017 second-round draft slots from Philadelphia in February 2017. The 76ers received Tiago Splitter and additional draft compensation, including a second-round right associated with Sterling Brown. Ilyasova helped Atlanta's frontcourt for a brief stretch, while Philadelphia's picks and flexibility supported a rebuild. The inherited 76ers Win grades Philadelphia B and Atlanta C+.

New Orleans acquired DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, a top-three-protected 2017 first-round pick and a 2017 second-round pick.

Orlando traded Serge Ibaka to Toronto for Terrence Ross and a 2017 first (Anzejs Pasecniks No. 25).

Portland holds a slight edge in the Jusuf Nurkić–Mason Plumlee trade because the Trail Blazers acquired the better long-term starter and also received a first-round pick, while Denver still gained several useful seasons from Plumlee as Nikola Jokić’s reserve and frontcourt partner.

Charlotte acquired Miles Plumlee; cash considerations from Milwaukee Bucks for Roy Hibbert; Spencer Hawes.

Denver acquired Mo Williams; cash from Atlanta Hawks for rights to Cenk Akyol; traded player exception.
