2006 NBA Trades

Denver received Allen Iverson; Ivan McFarlin from Philadelphia 76ers, sending Andre Miller; Joe Smith (Leynard); 2007 first-round pick (protected top 1 in 2007) (#21-Daequan Cook); first-round pick (protected top 7 in 2007, top 5 in 2008) (2007 #30-Petteri Koponen) in return.

Boston obtained former lottery pick Luke Jackson and cash from Cleveland in October 2006 for Dwayne Jones and a trade exception. Jackson did not develop into a durable Celtics wing, while Jones provided a chance at frontcourt depth in Cleveland. The inherited Even Trade assigns C+ to each team.

Atlanta sent Al Harrington and John Edwards to Indiana on August 22, 2006 in a sign-and-trade arrangement for a protected future first-round pick and cash. The first conveyed as the eleventh pick in 2007, used by Atlanta on Acie Law IV. Indiana got a short but real Harrington return and later used him in another multi-player deal with Golden State. Atlanta retained a lottery-adjacent first-round opportunity and cash, although Law never became a lasting star. Slight Hawks Edge, Atlanta B and Indiana B-.

Chicago exchanged Eddie Basden for Martynas Andriuskevicius in a transaction with broadly balanced realized value.

Denver acquired Joe Smith (Leynard) from Milwaukee Bucks for Ruben Patterson.

Milwaukee Bucks received Steve Blake; Brian Skinner; Ha Seung-Jin. Portland Trail Blazers received Jamaal Magloire.

The Nets acquired Mikki Moore from Sonics in exchange for 2009 second-round pick (#40, Derrick Brown).

Dallas received Anthony Johnson from Indiana Pacers and sent Darrell Armstrong; Josh Powell; Rawle Marshall in return.

Chicago sent J.R. Smith for Howard Eisley, 2007 second round pick (less favorable of Celtics, Warriors picks) (#49-Aaron Gray), 2007 second round pick (#51-JamesOn Curry), and the outgoing package produced materially greater realized value.

The long-term result was ultimately favorable to Pelicans: Houston received Kirk Snyder; Hornets' option to swap 2008 second round picks (#56-Sasha Kaun); cash from New Orleans Pelicans for Hornets' option to swap 2008 second round picks (#54-Maarty Leunen); cash.

New Orleans acquired Tyson Chandler for P.J. Brown and J.R. Smith, pairing Chris Paul with the defensive, rebounding and vertical center who anchored the franchise’s 56-win 2007-08 team.

Dallas received Austin Croshere from Indiana Pacers and sent Marquis Daniels in return.

Utah acquired Derek Fisher from Golden State in July 2006 for Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens. Fisher appeared in all 82 Jazz games and started 61 in 2006-07, helping Utah reach the Western Conference finals. McLeod played 26 Warriors games and became part of Golden State's four-player exchange with Indiana. Slight Jazz Edge: Utah A-, Golden State B+.

Houston traded Rudy Gay’s draft rights and Stromile Swift for Shane Battier, choosing an elite complementary defender for the Yao Ming–Tracy McGrady window while Memphis acquired the longer-lived scoring asset.

Indiana agreed to send Peja Stojaković to the Hornets in July 2006 for the draft rights to Andrew Betts as part of a sign-and-trade. Stojaković's first New Orleans season was injury-shortened, but in 2007-08 he scored 1,263 regular-season points in 77 games and played all 12 Hornets playoff games. Betts never appeared in an Indiana NBA regular season. Pelicans Win: A versus D+.

Milwaukee acquired Charlie Villanueva while sending out T.J. Ford; cash in the 2006-06-30 transaction with Raptors.

Trail Blazers Win: The trade is often remembered as a Boston precursor to Garnett, but that framing can obscure Portland's superior direct conversion. Ratliff's contract helped Boston construct a later package; Portland turned the seventh pick into Brandon Roy without another major acquisition. That difference makes the Trail Blazers the clear winner while preserving credit for Boston's asset management.

Boston acquired Rajon Rondo's draft rights, veteran Brian Grant and cash from Phoenix in June 2006 for a protected future first-round pick later associated with No. 24 Rudy Fernández. Rondo became the Celtics' starting point guard on the 2008 championship team and developed into an All-Star. The player Boston obtained dwarfed the Suns' direct value.

At the June 28, 2006 draft, Boston acquired the rights to No. 49 Leon Powe from Denver for a 2007 second-round selection later No. 49 Aaron Gray. Powe became a reserve Boston big man and scored 21 points against the Lakers in Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals. Denver never had Powe's Boston playing contribution and later moved its 2007 selection, which ended up associated with Gray. Celtics Win, Boston A- and Denver C+ for valid draft flexibility.

Chicago received rights to Thabo Sefolosha for rights to Rodney Carney, 2007 second round pick (#38-Kyrylo Fesenko), $1M cash and finished with a modest realized-value edge.

Portland acquired LaMarcus Aldridge’s draft rights and a future second-round pick from Chicago for the rights to Tyrus Thomas and Viktor Khryapa.

Dallas received 2007 second-round pick (#50-Renaldas Seibutis) from Los Angeles Lakers and sent draft rights to Danilo Pinnock in return.

Detroit acquired rights to Cheikh Samb from Los Angeles Lakers for Maurice Evans.

On June 28, 2006, Orlando drafted Israeli forward Lior Eliyahu No. 44 overall and sent his rights to Houston for cash. Eliyahu developed a long professional basketball career overseas but never logged a Rockets regular-season NBA appearance. Orlando received immediate financial compensation; Houston obtained international development rights with no realized NBA playing time. Magic Win, Orlando C+, Houston D+.

The 2006-06-28 trade leans slightly toward Portland Trail Blazers, though Indiana received useful value led by rights to James White.

Memphis and Portland Trail Blazers produced broadly comparable realized value in the 2006-06-28 exchange: rights to Alexander Johnson for 2008 second-round pick (#33-Joey Dorsey).

Milwaukee Bucks received rights to Damir Markota. San Antonio Spurs received 2007 second round pick (more favorable of Bucks, Rockets) (#33-Marcus Williams (Eliot)).

Minnesota acquired 2007 second round pick (#41-Chris Richard); cash while sending out rights to Bobby Jones (Ray) in the 2006-06-28 transaction with 76ers.

Portland acquired Brandon Roy’s draft rights from Minnesota for Randy Foye’s rights and cash, receiving a three-time All-Star and franchise leader before knee injuries shortened his career.

On June 28, 2006, Toronto acquired cash considerations from Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for rights to Edin Bavcic.

San Antonio acquired Matt Bonner, Eric Williams and Toronto's 2009 second-round pick on June 21, 2006 for Rasho Nesterovic and cash. Bonner became the long-term prize, playing 632 regular-season games across 10 Spurs seasons and appearing on the 2007 and 2014 championship teams. Toronto still received a solid direct return: Nesterovic played 151 games with 112 starts over the next two seasons, giving the Raptors dependable center minutes before he left for Indiana.

Toronto acquired Kris Humphries and Robert Whaley from Utah on June 8, 2006 for Rafael Araujo. Humphries became the only meaningful Raptors return, playing 159 regular-season games across three seasons as a reserve big before leaving Toronto in 2009; Whaley was waived less than two weeks after the trade. Utah received only 28 games and no starts from Araujo in 2006-07, the final NBA season of his career.

The Nets acquired Bostjan Nachbar from Hornets in exchange for Marc Jackson; Linton Johnson III; cash.

Cleveland acquired Lee Nailon and 2006 second round pick (#42-Daniel Gibson) for 2006 conditional second round pick (if Cavaliers finish with at least third best record in the league) (not exercised), producing a clear Cavaliers win on realized player, draft and roster value.

Cleveland acquired Flip Murray for Mike Wilks and $500K cash; the completed outcomes give the Cavaliers a modest realized-value edge.

Seattle acquired Earl Watson, Bryon Russell and a 2008 second-round pick through a February 2006 four-team trade. Denver received Reggie Evans, Ruben Patterson and Charles Smith. Portland added Voshon Lenard and Brian Skinner, while Sacramento received Sergei Monia and Vitaly Potapenko. The inherited Seattle SuperSonics Win grades Seattle B+, Denver and Portland C+ and Sacramento C.

On February 23, 2006, Houston sent Derek Anderson to Miami for Gerald Fitch and a trade exception. Anderson played 23 Heat regular-season games, totaling 465 minutes, and appeared in eight playoff games as Miami won its first NBA title. Fitch played no Rockets regular-season games and was assigned to their development affiliate, though the trade exception remained a valid financial tool. Heat Win, Miami B- and Houston C-.

New York acquired Steve Francis from Orlando for Trevor Ariza and Penny Hardaway's expiring contract. Francis duplicated Stephon Marbury's ball-dominant role, struggled with injuries and fit, and lasted little more than a season. Orlando cleared long-term salary and added a young wing, making this a clear Magic win.

Detroit came out slightly ahead, acquiring Kelvin Cato, 2007 first round pick (protected top 5) (#15 – Rodney Stuckey) for Darko Milicic, Carlos Arroyo.

The Clippers acquired Vladimir Radmanović from Seattle for Chris Wilcox on February 14, 2006. Radmanović played 30 regular-season games for Los Angeles, totaling 885 minutes and 320 points, and appeared in 12 playoff games that spring. Wilcox gave Seattle 29 games and 408 points immediately, then remained a Sonics starter in 2006-07 and 2007-08, including 82 games in 2006-07. SuperSonics Win: Seattle A-, Clippers B.

Houston traded Moochie Norris to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets on February 13, 2006, for Maciej Lampe. Lampe managed four Houston games, 12 minutes and four points; Norris appeared 16 times for the Hornets in the remainder of 2005-06. Hornets Win, New Orleans C+, Houston D+. Both sides received peripheral bench depth, not a major trade return.

Charlotte acquired Lonny Baxter from Houston Rockets for Keith Bogans.

New York acquired Jalen Rose; 2006 first round pick (#20-Renaldo Balkman); cash from Raptors for Antonio Davis. New York received useful value, but the partner side finished with the better overall return.

New Orleans/Oklahoma City acquired center Aaron Williams from Toronto on January 31, 2006 for two second-round choices: a 2006 pick ultimately No. 56 Edin Bavčić and a 2009 selection later No. 51 Jack McClinton. Williams contributed 34 Hornets games, 692 minutes, 197 points and 166 rebounds. Toronto sold Bavčić's rights and used the second pick in a separate larger trade with San Antonio. Even Trade, B for each.

Minnesota sent Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Dwayne Jones and a protected future first-round right to Boston for Ricky Davis, Marcus Banks, Mark Blount, Justin Reed and two second-round choices in January 2006. Szczerbiak contributed Celtics shooting, while the Timberwolves developed Craig Smith and Nikola Peković from their draft assets. The inherited slight Minnesota edge recognizes those valuable roster opportunities.

Minnesota acquired 2006 second round pick (#57-Loukas Mavrokefalidis) while sending out Nikoloz Tskitishvili in the 2006-01-26 transaction with Suns.

Indiana ended the Ron Artest standoff by acquiring Peja Stojakovic, while Sacramento received the defender and two-way wing who helped rescue its 2005-06 season and reach the playoffs.
