2007 NBA Trades

On December 29, 2007, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Gordan Giriček and 2009 first round pick (less favorable of Jazz, Knicks picks) (protected top 22 in 2009, top 15 in 2010, top 17 in 2011, top 16 in 2012, top 16 in 2013, else 2014 second round pick, $1.15M cash) (2010 #23-Trevor Booker) from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Kyle Korver.

Charlotte acquired Nazr Mohammed from Detroit Pistons for Primoz Brezec; Walter Herrmann.

Los Angeles clearly won by acquiring Trevor Ariza for Brian Cook and Maurice Evans, adding a championship-caliber wing at a limited cost.

The Nets acquired David Wesley from Hornets in exchange for Bernard Robinson; Mile Ilic; cash.

Minnesota acquired Beno Udrih and cash from San Antonio for a top-57-protected 2008 second-round pick that never conveyed. The Timberwolves immediately waived Udrih and used the cash as part of their broader Juwan Howard buyout process, while the Spurs achieved the salary and luxury-tax relief they were seeking. Both clubs accomplished the transaction’s practical objective, so an even grade is more accurate than the prior Wolves Win result.

Ricky Davis and Mark Blount supplied short-term production, but the protected first-round pick Miami surrendered became the most valuable long-term asset in the deal.

Los Angeles converted the draft rights to Jared Jordan into cash; New York waived Jordan before the regular season and received no NBA game value from the rights.

Cleveland acquired forward Cedric Simmons from New Orleans on September 29, 2007 for veteran David Wesley, with cash noted in the historical ledger. Simmons played seven Cavaliers games in 2007-08, totaling roughly 68 minutes, before becoming part of a February three-team trade. New Orleans played Wesley zero games but converted his contract into the brief October New Jersey transaction for Mile Ilic and Bernard Robinson, whom it waived. Even Trade, C+ each.

Dallas received Trenton Hassell from Minnesota Timberwolves and sent Greg Buckner in return.

Denver received Steven Hunter; Bobby Jones from Philadelphia 76ers, sending Reggie Evans; rights to Ricky Sanchez in return.

Memphis received rights to Juan Carlos Navarro for a first-round pick (protected top 19 in 2008, top 16 in 2009, top 14 in 2010-12, top 12 in 2013, else 2014 second-round pick, $1M cash) (2010 #12-Xavier Henry). The completed outcome is close enough to support an even evaluation.

Boston acquired Kevin Garnett from Minnesota for Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, two 2009 first-round picks and cash. Garnett won Defensive Player of the Year and helped the Celtics win the 2008 championship, reach the 2010 Finals and sustain a six-year contender. Minnesota received a legitimate rebuilding package led by Jefferson but did not create comparable team success.

On July 20, 2007, Phoenix sent Kurt Thomas and its 2008 and 2010 first-round picks to Seattle for a conditional 2009 second-round pick, while Phoenix received an $8 million trade exception. Seattle used the 2008 first on Serge Ibaka and the 2010 first on Quincy Pondexter, then later traded Thomas for additional assets. The combination of usable veteran value, two first-rounders and Ibaka's long-term impact makes this one of the strongest returns in the Seattle-to-Oklahoma City transition.

Houston acquired the rights to Luis Scola and Jackie Butler from San Antonio for the rights to Vassilis Spanoulis and a future second-round pick. Scola immediately became a productive starter, made the All-Rookie team and supplied five seasons of reliable scoring and rebounding.

On July 11, 2007, the Phoenix Suns acquired $3M cash from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for James Jones; rights to Rudy Fernandez.

Orlando acquired Rashard Lewis in a 2007 sign-and-trade for a protected second-round pick and a large trade exception. Lewis became an All-Star and a central spacer on the 2009 Finals team. Seattle used the exception days later to absorb Kurt Thomas and obtain two first-round picks, including the selection used on Serge Ibaka. Both organizations converted the mechanism into major value.

Boston sent Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West, the No. 5 draft rights used on Jeff Green and a future second-round pick to Seattle for Ray Allen and No. 35 Glen Davis in 2007. Allen became central to Boston's 2008 championship and Davis a useful reserve, while Seattle pursued a younger roster. Boston earned an A+ versus Seattle's B.

Charlotte acquired Jason Richardson; rights to Jermareo Davidson from Golden State Warriors for rights to Brandan Wright.

Dallas received draft rights to Reyshawn Terry from Orlando Magic and sent draft rights to Milovan Rakovic; cash in return.

Charlotte acquired Jason Richardson and Jermareo Davidson's draft rights from Golden State in 2007 for Brandan Wright's rights. Richardson started all 82 Bobcats games in 2007-08 and averaged 21.8 points, producing 1,788 points and 243 made three-pointers before a 2008 Phoenix trade. Wright played 98 Golden State games across 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2010-11. Charlotte Win: A- versus C+.

Orlando selected Australian guard Brad Newley with pick No. 54 in the June 28, 2007 NBA draft and sold his draft rights to Houston for cash. Newley built a long professional career in Australia and Europe but never played an NBA regular-season game for the Rockets. Houston later moved the rights to New York. Magic Win on realized NBA production, Orlando C+, Houston D+; the transaction chiefly exchanged international development rights for money.

Houston purchased Carl Landry's No. 31 draft rights from Seattle on June 28, 2007 for cash and a 2008 second-round pick, later No. 56 Sasha Kaun. Landry played 163 Rockets regular-season games from 2007-08 through his 2009-10 midseason departure, totaling 1,819 points and 2,178 minutes in his first two seasons alone. The 2007-06-28 trade leans slightly toward Miami Heat, though Indiana received useful value led by rights to Stanko Barac.

Miami Heat received the draft rights to Daequan Cook, a 2009 second-round pick and cash from Philadelphia for the draft rights to Jason Smith. Miami holds the slight completed-value edge because Cook gave the Heat three seasons and the future second later became part of the package used to acquire Mario Chalmers, while Smith gave Philadelphia useful frontcourt minutes before being traded in 2010.

New York acquired Zach Randolph, Fred Jones, Dan Dickau and the draft rights to Demetris Nichols from Portland for Steve Francis, Channing Frye and a 2008 second-round pick. The Knicks receive the better completed grade because Randolph immediately became a high-volume scorer and rebounder and later retained trade value, while Portland’s strongest direct basketball return was Frye and Francis never played a regular-season game for the Blazers.

On June 28, 2007, San Antonio Spurs acquired 2008 second round pick (#45-Goran Dragic) from Toronto Raptors in exchange for rights to Giorgos Printezis.

Detroit came out slightly ahead, acquiring 2009 second round pick (#39 – Jonas Jerebko), 2011 second round pick (#33 – Kyle Singler) for Carlos Delfino.

Houston traded Juwan Howard to Minnesota for Mike James and Justin Reed on June 11, 2007. Minnesota waived Howard on October 29 before he played a Timberwolves regular-season game. James returned to Houston and provided backcourt appearances during 2007-08; Reed was a fringe addition. Rockets Win, Houston B- versus Minnesota D+. Howard's later Dallas career wasn't a Minnesota return.

Philadelphia sent Alan Henderson, cash and unspecified draft considerations to Utah on February 22, 2007, receiving the right to swap 2007 second-round picks. The swap went unused, and Utah waived Henderson March 2 without a Jazz game. Philadelphia removed a seldom-used veteran and obtained draft flexibility that it did not exercise; Utah received cash of an undisclosed amount. Slight 76ers Edge, Philadelphia C+, Utah C.

On February 22, 2007, Portland acquired Fred Jones; future considerations from Toronto Raptors in exchange for Juan Dixon.

Charlotte acquired Eric Williams; 2009 second round pick (less favorable of Hornets, Spurs picks) (#54-Robert Vaden); $1M cash from San Antonio Spurs for Melvin Ely.

On February 13, 2007, Houston acquired center Jake Tsakalidis from Memphis for forward Scott Padgett. Tsakalidis played 13 Rockets regular-season games, logging 132 minutes and averaging 2.3 points and 3.1 rebounds; he also made one short playoff appearance. Padgett appeared in seven Grizzlies games, logging 33 minutes and scoring two points before the team waived him April 4. Rockets Win, Houston C+, Memphis D+.

Golden State acquired Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Šarūnas Jasikevičius and Josh Powell for Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod, reshaping the roster that produced the “We Believe” upset.

Denver acquired Steve Blake from Milwaukee Bucks for Earl Boykins; Julius Hodge; $700K cash.

The Nets acquired Bernard Robinson from Bobcats in exchange for Jeff McInnis; cash.
