2010 NBA Trades

New Jersey obtained Sasha Vujačić and two protected first-round draft assets in a December 2010 three-team trade. Houston received Terrence Williams and the Lakers took Joe Smith plus second-round rights. The Nets prioritized future flexibility and a veteran perimeter role, whereas Houston bet on Williams's athleticism. The inherited slight Nets edge grades New Jersey B+, Houston B and Los Angeles C+.

The realized outcome leaned slightly toward Sacramento Kings: Houston received 2011 second-round pick (protected top 55 in 2011) (not exercised) from Sacramento Kings for Jermaine Taylor; cash.

New Orleans sent Peja Stojaković and Jerryd Bayless to Toronto on November 20, 2010, receiving Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks. Jack supplied 70 Hornets games that season and another 45 in 2011-12, while Toronto kept younger guard Bayless through 2011-12 but did not retain Stojaković for long. The acquired guard production gives the New Orleans franchise an edge, A-, with Toronto B- for Bayless and flexibility rather than an enduring Stojaković return.

New Orleans acquired Jerryd Bayless from Portland Trail Blazers for first round pick (protected top 7 in 2011, top 8 in 2012-14, else 2015 second round pick, 2016 second round pick) (2011 #19-Tobias Harris).

On October 18, 2010, New Orleans sent the Clippers-origin protected 2014 second-round pick to San Antonio for reserve guard Curtis Jerrells. Jerrells was waived by the Hornets October 24 without a regular-season NBA appearance. The choice ultimately conveyed at No. 58 and was used on Jordan McRae after subsequent transactions. Spurs Win, San Antonio B- for a real transferable pick, New Orleans D+ for a short camp audition.

New Orleans acquired Willie Green; Jason Smith; 2011 second round pick (#45-Josh Harrellson) from Philadelphia 76ers for Craig Brackins; Darius Songaila; 2011 second round pick (#50-Lavoy Allen).

Indiana acquired point guard Darren Collison and forward James Posey in the August 2010 four-team exchange that brought Troy Murphy to New Jersey, Courtney Lee to Houston, and Trevor Ariza to New Orleans. Collison gave the Pacers a young lead guard with actual receiving-team production. The inherited Pacers Win grades Indiana A-, Houston B, New Orleans B and New Jersey C.

New Orleans traded Julian Wright to Toronto for Marco Belinelli on August 11, 2010. Belinelli gave the Hornets 80 games in 2010-11, made 134 threes at 41.4 percent, and returned as a key reserve in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign. Wright played one Raptors season and never acquired a lasting role. Hornets Win, New Orleans A-, Toronto D+.

Houston finished with a modest realized-value edge: Houston received 2015 second-round pick (protected top 50 and #56-60, else extinguished) (not exercised) from Toronto Raptors for David Andersen; $1M cash.

Cleveland acquired Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins and 2013 second round pick (#39-Jeff Withey) for Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair; the completed outcomes give the Cavaliers a modest realized-value edge.

Chicago received C.J. Watson for 2011 second round pick (less favorable of Jazz, Suns picks) (#44-Charles Jenkins), traded player exception and finished with a modest realized-value edge.

Chicago acquired C.J. Watson from Golden State on July 22, 2010, for the second-round pick ultimately used on Charles Jenkins and a traded-player exception. Watson played all 82 Bulls games in 2010-11 and 49 in 2011-12, scoring 879 points across 131 games. Jenkins gave Golden State 98 games across 2011-12 and part of 2012-13, including 28 rookie starts. Bulls Win, Chicago B+ and Golden State B-; both teams got NBA playing value.

Milwaukee Bucks received Jon Brockman. Sacramento Kings received Darnell Jackson; 2011 second round pick (Bucks choice of Bucks or Bulls pick) (#60-Isaiah Thomas).

On July 14, 2010, the Phoenix Suns acquired Hedo Turkoglu from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Leandro Barbosa; Dwayne Jones.

The Nets acquired Anthony Morrow from Warriors in exchange for 2011 second-round pick (top 55 protected) (not exercised).

Charlotte acquired Erick Dampier; Matt Carroll; Eduardo Najera; cash considerations from Dallas Mavericks for Tyson Chandler; Alexis Ajinça.

New Jersey received sharpshooter Anthony Morrow from Golden State on July 13, 2010, for a conditional 2011 second-round selection that never conveyed. Morrow played 120 Nets games during 2010-11 and 2011-12, averaging 13.2 and 12.0 points, respectively, including 65 starts across the two seasons. The pick never transferred to Golden State. Nets Win, New Jersey B+, Warriors D+.

Minnesota acquired Kosta Koufos; first round pick (protected top 14 in 2011, top 12 in 2012, top 10 in 2013, top 9 in 2014-15, cash thereafter) (2011 #20-Donatas Motiejunas); 2011 first-round pick (protected top 16 in 2011, top 14 in 2012 and top 12 in 2013; if Utah's 2014 first-round pick was outside the top 9, Minnesota could swap 2014 first-round picks; if no first-round pick conveyed by 2013 and no 2014 swap occurred, Minnesota would receive Utah's 2014 second-round pick) (2012 No. 18, Terrence Jones) while sending out Al Jefferson in the 2010-07-13 transaction with Jazz.

Phoenix acquired Josh Childress from Atlanta in July 2010 through a sign-and-trade. The Hawks received the Suns' 2012 second-round pick, later No. 43 Mike Scott, and an associated trade exception. Scott became a useful Atlanta rotation forward; Childress had an underwhelming Suns tenure. Atlanta earned B, Phoenix D.

Moving Michael Beasley for two second-round picks and cash gave Miami additional flexibility at the exact moment the Big Three roster was being assembled.

Chris Bosh’s separate Toronto sign-and-trade completed Miami’s Big Three and supplied the two-way frontcourt versatility that made the championship teams work.

Miami acquired LeBron James in a sign-and-trade that sent Cleveland two future first-round picks, two second-round picks, a 2012 first-round swap right and a $14.5 million trade exception. James led the Heat to four consecutive Finals, two championships and two league MVP awards. Cleveland could not replace him, but the unusually large compensation package and trade flexibility produced a strong recovery from minimal leverage.

Golden State acquired David Lee in a sign-and-trade for Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf, Kelenna Azubuike and two second-round picks. Lee became an All-Star, stabilized the frontcourt and helped the Warriors return to the playoffs before accepting a reduced role on the 2015 championship team.

Chicago sent Kirk Hinrich, rights to Kevin Seraphin, cash considerations for rights to Vladimir Veremeenko, trade exception, and the outgoing package produced materially greater realized value.

Chicago exchanged Hakim Warrick for 2011 second round pick (#44-Charles Jenkins) in a transaction with broadly comparable realized value.

Chicago received Carlos Boozer, 2011 second round pick (protected) (#43-Malcolm Lee) for ~$13M traded player exception. The completed outcome does not show enough separation to justify a winner.

Milwaukee acquired cash considerations while sending out rights to Jerome Jordan in the 2010-07-08 transaction with Knicks.

Pelicans Win, narrowly. New Orleans earns B for Quincy Pondexter's initial Hornets wing minutes and the separate value of Craig Brackins's rights. Oklahoma City gets B- for obtaining Cole Aldrich and veteran Morris Peterson, though neither became a major long-term Thunder contributor. Pondexter's later return to New Orleans and Aldrich's later teams arose from distinct transactions. The July 8, 2010 agreement sent the draft rights to center Cole Aldrich, taken eleventh overall, and veteran Morris Peterson to Oklahoma City in exchange for the rights to Craig Brackins and Quincy Pondexter. New York acquired Amar'e Stoudemire from Suns for 2012 second round pick (protected top 55) (not exercised); $16.5M trade exception. New York ultimately received the stronger realized value.

On July 8, 2010, Oklahoma City received veteran Morris Peterson and No. 11 Cole Aldrich draft rights from New Orleans, sending the rights to No. 21 Craig Brackins and No. 26 Quincy Pondexter. Aldrich played 44 Thunder regular-season games across 2010-11 and 2011-12. Peterson later moved in a separate package with D.J. White for Nazr Mohammed. Pondexter played in New Orleans, while Brackins was included in a later deal for Willie Green and Jason Smith. Slight Oklahoma City Thunder Edge is retained but graded B for Thunder and B- for the Hornets' successor franchise.

The Nets acquired Quinton Ross from Wizards in exchange for Jianlian Yi; $3M cash.

Atlanta acquired the rights to Jordan Crawford and Tibor Pleiss from the New Jersey Nets for the rights to Damion James during the 2010 NBA Draft. The Hawks then sent Pleiss's rights to Oklahoma City for cash. The ledger now marks Atlanta's holding of Pleiss as temporary, avoiding a duplicate final owner. The inherited Slight Hawks Edge grades Atlanta B, the Thunder B and the Nets C.

Dallas received draft rights to Dominique Jones from Memphis Grizzlies and sent $3M cash in return.

Dallas received 2013 second-round pick (protected top 40 in 2013) (#41-Jamaal Franklin); cash considerations from Toronto Raptors and sent draft rights to Solomon Alabi in return.

Indiana and Oklahoma City Thunder produced a stronger realized return for Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2010-06-24 exchange.

Los Angeles Clippers won the 2010-06-24 trade with Oklahoma City Thunder in hindsight: rights to Eric Bledsoe produced the stronger realized return than first-round pick (protected top 10 in 2012-15, unprotected in 2016) (2012 #22-Fab Melo).

Miami and Oklahoma City Thunder produced broadly comparable realized value in the 2010-06-24 exchange: second-round pick (protected top 40 in 2011, top 40 in 2012, unprotected in 2013) (2011 #54-Milan Macvan) for rights to Latavious Williams.

Minnesota acquired Martell Webster while sending out Ryan Gomes; rights to Luke Babbitt in the 2010-06-24 transaction with Blazers.

Minnesota acquired rights to Lazar Hayward; rights to Nemanja Bjelica while sending out rights to Trevor Booker; rights to Hamady N'Diaye in the 2010-06-24 transaction with Wizards.

The Nets acquired 2012 second-round pick (#60, Robert Sacre) from Bucks in exchange for Chris Douglas-Roberts.

Miami and Oklahoma City Thunder produced a stronger realized return for Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2010-06-23 exchange: 2010 second-round pick (#32-Dexter Pittman) for Daequan Cook; 2010 first-round pick (#18-Eric Bledsoe).

On June 22, 2010, Golden State dealt scorer Corey Maggette and the No. 44 draft choice later used on Jerome Jordan to Milwaukee for Charlie Bell and Dan Gadzuric. Maggette played 67 Bucks games in 2010-11, while Bell appeared in 19 Warriors games and Gadzuric in 28 before being moved again. Milwaukee sold Jerome Jordan's rights to the Knicks after the draft. Gadzuric later helped Golden State obtain a separate 2012 second-round pick ultimately used on Draymond Green, alongside Brandan Wright in a February trade. Slight Bucks Edge on immediate return, Milwaukee B+ and Warriors B; the later pick can't be credited solely to Gadzuric.

The realized-value outcome leaned Blazers, though the margin was narrow. The Warriors acquired 2010 second round pick (#44-Jerome Jordan); cash considerations from Portland Trail Blazers for 2010 second round pick (#34-Armon Johnson).

On June 17, 2010, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Samuel Dalembert.

Boston acquired Nate Robinson and Marcus Landry from the Knicks at the February 2010 trade deadline. New York received Eddie House, J.R. Giddens, Bill Walker and a conditional 2014 second that didn't convey. Robinson provided bench scoring during Boston's 2010 Finals run; Walker developed a limited Knicks rotation role. The Celtics earned a modest advantage.

Charlotte acquired Theo Ratliff from San Antonio Spurs for 2016 second round pick (protected top 55 in 2016, else extinguished) (not exercised).

Charlotte acquired Tyrus Thomas from Chicago Bulls for Ronald Murray; Acie Law; first round pick (protected top 14 in 2012, top 12 in 2013, top 10 in 2014, top 8 in 2015, unprotected in 2016) (2014 #16-Jusuf Nurkic).

Win. Milwaukee acquired a scorer who immediately transformed its 2010 playoff push and also gained favorable draft mechanics. Chicago created useful flexibility, but Warrick and Alexander did not replace Salmons' basketball value and the cap benefit was more indirect. Milwaukee solved an urgent roster need without sacrificing a core asset, earning an A to Chicago's C.

Utah Jazz clearly won the completed-value comparison; Memphis received Ronnie Brewer but surrendered first-round pick (protected top 14 in 2011, top 12 in 2012, top 10 in 2013, top 9 in 2014-15, cash thereafter) (2011 #20-Donatas Motiejunas).

Milwaukee Bucks received Primoz Brezec; Royal Ivey; 2010 second round pick (#37-Darington Hobson). Philadelphia 76ers received Francisco Elson; Jodie Meeks.

Rockets Win: The transaction is remembered as a McGrady salary-clearing deal, but that shorthand understates Houston's work. The Rockets turned an ending into Martin, a prospect, a first and swap control, while New York purchased flexibility and Sacramento reset its backcourt. Houston's return had the deepest combination of present and future utility.

On February 18, 2010, Washington Wizards acquired 2010 second round pick (top 41 protected in 2010) (not exercised) from Sacramento Kings in exchange for Dominic McGuire; cash.

Cleveland acquired Antawn Jamison from Washington and Sebastian Telfair from the Clippers on February 17, 2010. Washington obtained Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thornton, Emir Preldžić's rights and a 2010 first-round pick. Los Angeles acquired Drew Gooden from Washington. The inherited Even Trade assigns Cleveland, Washington and the Clippers B, with important differences in each team's goals.

Minnesota acquired Darko Milicic; cash while sending out Brian Cardinal in the 2010-02-17 transaction with Knicks.

The 2010-02-16 trade leans slightly toward Portland Trail Blazers, although Los Angeles Clippers still received useful value led by Travis Outlaw; Steve Blake.

Dallas received Caron Butler; Brendan Haywood; DeShawn Stevenson; cash from Washington Wizards and sent Josh Howard; Drew Gooden; James Singleton; Quinton Ross in return.

The Clippers acquired guard Bobby Brown from the New Orleans Hornets on January 26, 2010, surrendering a top-55-protected second-round selection in 2014. Brown played 23 Clippers games with 191 minutes, 70 points and 42 assists. The pick ultimately conveyed at No. 58, becoming Jordan McRae, but New Orleans subsequently transferred it to San Antonio in the separate Curtis Jerrells trade. Hornets Win, New Orleans B- for a valuable tradable pick and Clippers C for brief guard depth.

On January 25, 2010, Chicago sent center Aaron Gray to the New Orleans Hornets for guard Devin Brown. Brown played 11 Bulls games, 93 minutes and scored 20 points after the exchange. Gray played 24 Hornets games in the rest of 2009-10 and another 41 in 2010-11, totaling 65 appearances, 792 minutes and 215 points. Hornets Win: New Orleans B, Chicago D+.

The Nets acquired Kris Humphries; Shawne Williams from Mavericks in exchange for Eduardo Najera.

On January 11, 2010 New Orleans traded reserve center Hilton Armstrong to Sacramento for cash and a conditional 2016 second-round selection. The pick never conveyed. Armstrong played six Kings games, logging 56 minutes and ten points before being sent onward as part of a separate three-team transaction. New Orleans received the cash; Sacramento obtained a brief player contract and occasional minutes. Even Trade, C+ for New Orleans and C for Sacramento.

The Nets acquired Chris Quinn; 2012 second-round pick (#57, Ilkan Karaman) from Heat in exchange for 2010 second-round pick (protected top 50) (not exercised).
