2014 NBA Trades

Detroit acquired Anthony Tolliver from Phoenix Suns for Tony Mitchell.

Boston shipped Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell to Dallas on December 18, 2014, receiving Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, two 2016 draft selections and a trade exception. Rondo's Dallas fit failed, although Powell became a durable Mavericks contributor. Crowder developed into a key Celtics wing. The overall exchange favored Boston.

The Nets acquired Brandon Davies; 76ers' option to swap 2018 second-round picks with Nets (#55, Arnoldas Kulboka) from 76ers in exchange for Andrei Kirilenko; Jorge Gutierrez; 76ers' option to swap 2018 second-round picks with Nets (#38, Khyri Thomas); 2020 second-round pick (#47, Yam Madar); cash.

New York Knicks received Arnett Moultrie; 76ers' option to swap 2018 second round picks with Knicks (#43-Justin Jackson (Nicholas)). Philadelphia 76ers received Travis Outlaw; 76ers' option to swap 2018 second round picks with Knicks (#39-Isaac Bonga); Nic Claxton. The partner captured substantially more realized value than New York.

The Nets acquired Casper Ware from 76ers in exchange for Marquis Teague; 2019 second-round pick (more favorable of Bucks, Kings picks) (#42, Admiral Schofield).

Boston sent Joel Anthony to Detroit for Will Bynum on October 17, 2014. The Celtics released Bynum before he played a regular-season game; Anthony gave Detroit 49 games in 2014-15. Both franchises had modest roster motivations, but Detroit obtained the only substantive on-court contribution.

Cleveland acquired 2015 second round pick (conditional if pick is not conveyed to Celtics, protected top 50 and #56-60) (not exercised) for Keith Bogans and 2018 second round pick (#55-Arnoldas Kulboka), but the outgoing package produced a modestly stronger realized return.

Boston acquired four players, future second-round selections and a trade exception from Cleveland in September 2014. Cleveland took Keith Bogans and conditional seconds that did not convey. Boston's pick opportunities were later linked to Abdel Nader and Kadeem Allen. The inherited Celtics Win assigns Boston B+ and Cleveland C.

The long-term result was broadly balanced: Houston received Jason Terry; 2015 second-round pick (protected #50-60) (#36-Rakeem Christmas); 2016 second-round pick (#37-Chinanu Onuaku) from Sacramento Kings for Alonzo Gee; Scotty Hopson; trade exception.

Milwaukee won the Jared Dudley salary-clearing trade. The Bucks received a useful rotation wing plus a protected first-round pick, while the Clippers got almost no on-court return from Carlos Delfino or Miroslav Raduljica and only a low-value second-round asset.

Oklahoma City received 2015 second round pick (if this pick is not conveyed from 76ers to Celtics from previous trade, protected top 55 in 2015) (not exercised); trade exception and sent Hasheem Thabeet; cash considerations. The long-term value clearly favored 76ers.

Cleveland acquired Kevin Love in a three-team trade that sent Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett to Minnesota and a protected Miami first-round pick to Philadelphia, converting prospect capital into a championship core.

New York acquired Quincy Acy; Travis Outlaw from Kings for Wayne Ellington; Jeremy Tyler; removal of protection on Knicks 2016 second round pick. New York received useful value, but the partner side finished with the better overall return.

Cleveland exchanged Carrick Felix, 2015 second round pick (#54-Daniel Diez / Dani Diez) and cash for John Lucas III, Malcolm Thomas and Erik Murphy, with the realized return ultimately favorable to Jazz.

Washington acquired Kris Humphries from Boston in July 2014 through a sign-and-trade that gave the Celtics a trade exception and a conditional second-round pick that never conveyed. Humphries gave the Wizards useful frontcourt minutes, while Boston chiefly obtained salary flexibility. The inherited Wizards Win gives Washington A- and Boston C+.

Dallas received draft rights to Emir Preldžic from Washington Wizards and sent DeJuan Blair in return.

Atlanta acquired Thabo Sefolosha in a July 15, 2014 sign-and-trade with Oklahoma City, along with Giorgos Printezis's draft rights and cash. The Thunder received rights to Sofoklis Schortsanitis and an exception. Sefolosha became part of Atlanta's defense-first supporting cast on a 60-win 2014-15 team and played several seasons for the Hawks. Hawks Win, Atlanta B+ and Oklahoma City C.

Slight Rockets Edge. Houston landed Trevor Ariza, who became a four-year starter, plus the 2015 first-round pick that became Sam Dekker. New Orleans got a strong first season from Ömer Aşık but limited long-term return, while Washington salvaged Ariza's free-agent departure into Melvin Ely and a trade exception it soon used to help acquire Kris Humphries.

Chicago exchanged Greg Smith (b. 1991-01-08) for rights to Tadija Dragicevic in a transaction with broadly balanced realized value.

Chicago received rights to Milovan Rakovic for Anthony Randolph, 2015 second round pick (more favorable of Bulls, Nuggets picks) (#51-Tyler Harvey), 2016 second round pick (more favorable of Blazers, Bulls picks) (#47-Jake Layman), plus 1 additional asset, but the partner generated modestly stronger realized value.

Charlotte acquired cash from New Orleans Pelicans for Scotty Hopson.

Houston Rockets received rights to Sergei Lishchuk. Los Angeles Lakers received Jeremy Lin; first-round pick (protected top 14 in 2015, top 10 in 2016-17, top 5 in 2018-19, top 3 in 2020, unprotected in 2021) (2015 #27-Larry Nance Jr.); 2015 second-round pick (protected top 50 and 56-60, else extinguished) (not exercised).

Charlotte acquired Scotty Hopson; cash from Cleveland Cavaliers for Brendan Haywood; rights to Dwight Powell.

On July 12, 2014, the Phoenix Suns acquired Isaiah Thomas from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for rights to Alex Oriakhi; $7M trade exemption.

Cleveland exchanged Alonzo Gee for 2016 second round pick (protected top 55 in 2016, else extinguished) (not exercised), with the realized return ultimately favorable to Pelicans.

Boston acquired Tyler Zeller, Marcus Thornton and a future first-round right in a July 2014 three-club transaction. Brooklyn received Jarrett Jack and Sergey Karasev from Cleveland, while the Cavaliers acquired overseas draft rights to Edin Bavčić and İlkan Karaman alongside a conditional second. The inherited Cavaliers Win grades Cleveland A, Boston B+ and Brooklyn C-. The missing Nets and Cavaliers incoming assets have been restored from the official transaction ledger.

On July 10, 2014, Toronto acquired Diante Garrett from Utah Jazz in exchange for Steve Novak; 2017 second round pick (#36-Jonah Bolden).

Toronto acquired Lou Williams and the rights to Lucas Nogueira from Atlanta on June 30, 2014, sending John Salmons and a 2015 second-round pick to the Hawks. Williams won the 2014-15 Sixth Man of the Year award during a productive Raptors season, while Salmons was waived by Atlanta. Raptors Win; Toronto A-, Atlanta C-.

The Nets acquired rights to Cory Jefferson from 76ers in exchange for cash.

The Nets acquired rights to Markel Brown from Timberwolves in exchange for cash.

The Nets acquired rights to Xavier Thames from Raptors in exchange for cash.

Milwaukee selected Lamar Patterson at No. 48 in 2014, then moved his rights to Atlanta for a 2015 second-rounder. Patterson later appeared in 35 regular-season Hawks games in 2015-16; the acquired second was routed onward by Milwaukee in the separate Jason Kidd transaction before it became the No. 41 pick in 2015. The official canonical Bucks-win grade concerns asset flexibility rather than Pat Connaughton's subsequent Milwaukee free agency.

Charlotte acquired rights to P.J. Hairston; rights to Semaj Christon; 2019 second round pick (#43-Jaylen Nowell); cash from Miami Heat for rights to Shabazz Napier.

Charlotte acquired cash from Oklahoma City Thunder for rights to Semaj Christon.

Chicago sent rights to Jusuf Nurkic, rights to Gary Harris, 2015 second round pick (less favorable of Blazers, Bulls picks) (#53-Dom Pointer) for Anthony Randolph, rights to Doug McDermott, and the outgoing package produced materially greater realized value.

The Afflalo-for-Fournier deal finishes as an even trade once the direct asset chain is followed. Orlando developed Evan Fournier into a long-term starter, while Denver received a useful half-season of Arron Afflalo and then converted him into a package headlined by Will Barton and a first-round pick.

Minnesota selected Italian forward Alessandro Gentile No. 53 in the June 26, 2014 NBA draft and sent his rights to Houston for cash. Gentile was an accomplished Italian national-team player and Milan standout, but never appeared in a regular-season NBA game for Houston. The Timberwolves obtained the immediate cash payment; the Rockets acquired a speculative international draft stash with no realized NBA minutes. Wolves Win, Minnesota C+, Houston D+.

Indiana drafted French forward Louis Labeyrie No. 57 in 2014 and sold his draft rights to New York for cash, with the transaction recorded June 27 following the June 26 draft. Labeyrie maintained a substantial European professional career but never appeared in an NBA regular-season game for the Knicks. Pacers Win on realized return, Indiana C+, New York D+; the earlier Knicks B grade lacked an on-court basis.

Los Angeles purchased the draft rights to Jordan Clarkson for cash and found a productive NBA guard with the No. 46 pick.

Memphis and Utah Jazz produced broadly comparable realized value in the 2014-06-26 exchange: rights to Jarnell Stokes for 2016 second-round pick (more favorable of Celtics, Raptors picks) (#52-Joel Bolomboy).

New Orleans acquired rights to Russ Smith from Philadelphia 76ers for rights to Pierre Jackson.

On June 26, 2014, San Antonio Spurs acquired rights to Nemanja Dangubic from Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for rights to Cory Jefferson; rights to Jordan McRae.

Dallas received Tyson Chandler; Raymond Felton from New York Knicks and sent Jose Calderon; Shane Larkin; Wayne Ellington; Samuel Dalembert; 2014 second-round pick (#34-Cleanthony Early); 2014 second-round pick (#51-Thanasis Antetokounmpo) in return.

Charlotte acquired Luke Ridnour; Gary Neal from Milwaukee Bucks for Ramon Sessions; Jeff Adrien.

Cleveland surrendered Earl Clark, Henry Sims and 2 additional assets for Spencer Hawes, leaving the partner with a clear realized-value win.

Denver acquired Aaron Brooks from Houston Rockets for Jordan Hamilton.

Indiana sent Danny Granger and a 2015 second-round pick to Philadelphia for Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen during its 2014 title push; Turner struggled to fit, but Allen supplied several seasons of reserve value.

The long-term outcome favored Philadelphia 76ers; Los Angeles Clippers' return led by 2014 second-round pick (protected top 40 and #46-60) (not exercised) did not match the value it surrendered.

On February 20, 2014, Los Angeles traded Antawn Jamison and cash to Atlanta for the draft rights to Turkish guard Cenk Akyol. Atlanta waived Jamison the next day before any Hawks regular-season appearance. Akyol, a 2005 second-round selection whose rights the Clippers acquired, never logged an NBA game for Los Angeles. Hawks Win narrowly, Atlanta C+ for cash received, Clippers D+ for unexercised overseas rights and flexibility.

Miami and Sacramento Kings produced a narrow realized-value edge for Heat in the 2014-02-20 exchange: 2015 second-round pick (protected #31-49 and #56-60) (not exercised) for Roger Mason Jr.; cash considerations.

On February 20, 2014, San Antonio Spurs acquired Austin Daye from Toronto Raptors in exchange for Nando De Colo.

The Nets acquired Marcus Thornton (Terrell) from Kings in exchange for Jason Terry; Reggie Evans.

The realized-value outcome ultimately favored Warriors. The Warriors acquired Steve Blake from Los Angeles Lakers for Kent Bazemore; MarShon Brooks.

The Nets acquired rights to Edin Bavcic from Pelicans in exchange for Tyshawn Taylor; cash.

The Nets acquired Marquis Teague from Bulls in exchange for Tornike Shengelia.

Boston traded Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks to Golden State in January 2014, receiving Joel Anthony, cash and protected draft compensation from Miami. Miami acquired Toney Douglas from the Warriors. When the protected first failed to convey, its later second-round rights became linked to Jordan Mickey and Deyonta Davis; another second led to Ben Bentil. The inherited slight Celtics edge grades Boston B+, Golden State B and Miami C-.

Grizzlies Win. Lee fit Memphis immediately as a two-way guard and wing on a playoff-caliber roster. His shooting, defensive competence and multi-season usefulness gave the Grizzlies the clearest direct basketball value of the three participants. Boston’s return was mainly short-term, with Bayless providing guard minutes during a transition year and Gomes not becoming part of the long-term core. Oklahoma City’s compensation was draft-based and modest, but two second-round opportunities were reasonable consideration for facilitating the deal.
