2005 NBA Trades

Detroit acquired 2006-09 (Timberwolves choice) second round pick (2009 #35-DaJuan Summers) from Minnesota Timberwolves for Ronald Dupree.

Charlotte acquired Jumaine Jones from Los Angeles Lakers for 2007 second round pick (#40-Sun Yue).

Milwaukee acquired center Jamaal Magloire from the Hornets on October 26, 2005, surrendering wing Desmond Mason and a 2006 first-round pick that became No. 15 Cedric Simmons, with cash also recorded. Magloire started all 82 Bucks games in 2005-06 and averaged 9.5 rebounds; Mason and Simmons gave New Orleans several roster options, although Simmons never became a star. Pelicans Win narrowly: B+ versus B.

Chicago acquired Tim Thomas, Michael Sweetney / Mike Sweetney, Jermaine Jackson, plus 4 additional assets from Knicks for Eddy Curry, Antonio Davis, Bulls' option to swap 2007 first round picks (#23-Wilson Chandler), producing a clear realized-value win.

Houston acquired Rafer Alston from Toronto for Mike James on October 4, 2005. James gave the Raptors one exceptional scoring season, averaging 20.3 points across 79 starts. Alston became Houston's starting point guard for parts of four seasons, totaling 267 regular-season Rockets games after the deal. Slight Rockets Edge, Houston B+, Toronto B.

Even Trade. Boston Celtics earns C+; New Orleans Pelicans earns C+. Boston sought an immediate reserve guard while the Hornets prioritized an additional future selection

The 2005-08-25 trade leans slightly toward Phoenix Suns, though Indiana received useful value led by 2008 second-round pick (#55-Mike Taylor).

Atlanta acquired Joe Johnson from Phoenix through an August 2005 sign-and-trade that sent Boris Diaw and two first-round picks to the Suns. Johnson became the Hawks' franchise-leading scorer through several playoff seasons and six All-Star appearances. Diaw provided good Phoenix minutes and the picks became significant assets, but Johnson was the most valuable player received in the trade.

The Clippers acquired Sam Cassell and a protected first-round pick for Marko Jarić and Lionel Chalmers, gaining the veteran leader of a historic playoff run and an asset later used in the Chris Paul trade.

The Nets acquired Marc Jackson; cash from 76ers in exchange for 2006 conditional second-round pick (not exercised).

Miami used the five-team structure to acquire Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and James Posey, three major rotation pieces on the 2006 championship team. The other clubs gained salary relief, depth or secondary draft value, but none received a return comparable to an immediate title core.

Charlotte acquired Jake Voskuhl from Phoenix Suns for 2007 second round pick (top 55 protected) (not exercised).

Charlotte acquired 2006 second round pick (#50-Ryan Hollins) from Sacramento Kings for Jason Hart.

Caron Butler became a two-time All-Star and core playoff wing for Washington, while Kwame Brown’s expiring contract later provided important salary matching in the Pau Gasol trade.

Memphis and Sacramento Kings produced a narrow realized-value edge for Grizzlies in the 2005-08-02 exchange: Bobby Jackson; Greg Ostertag for Bonzi Wells.

Cleveland exchanged Jiri Welsch for 2006 second round pick (#44-Lior Eliyahu), with the realized return ultimately favorable to Bucks.

The 2005-06-28 exchange produced broadly comparable realized value: rights to Martynas Andriuskevicius for 2006 second round pick (#55-Ejike Ugboaja); cash.

Denver received rights to Linas Kleiza; rights to Ricky Sanchez from Portland Trail Blazers, sending rights to Jarrett Jack in return.

Memphis acquired Lawrence Roberts draft rights for cash plus 2006 and 2007 second-round picks. Roberts gave Memphis 87 games and 18 starts. Seattle used the 2006 pick on Yotam Halperin, who never played in the NBA, and converted the 2007 Carl Landry pick into a 2008 second-round pick plus cash before later selling Sasha Kaun draft rights. Memphis therefore holds a slight completed-value edge rather than the prior Seattle A-/Memphis C split.

New York acquired Quentin Richardson; rights to Nate Robinson; cash from Suns for Kurt Thomas; rights to Dijon Thompson. The value leaned toward New York, but the partner still received meaningful return.

Utah moved from No. 6 to No. 3 in the 2005 draft by sending Portland the No. 6 and No. 27 picks plus a protected 2006 first-rounder. The Jazz used No. 3 on Deron Williams, who played 439 regular-season games for Utah, made two All-Star teams and two All-NBA Second Teams, and led the 2007 club to the Western Conference finals. Portland received useful value through Martell Webster, the No. 27 asset's role in acquiring Jarrett Jack, and eventual No. 30 pick Joel Freeland, but no return approached Williams' peak.

On June 7, 2005, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired 2005 second round pick (#60-Alex Acker) from the Utah Jazz in exchange for 2008 second round pick (protected top 35 in 2008-09) (2008 #44-Ante Tomic).

Boston reacquired Antoine Walker from Atlanta in February 2005, sending Gary Payton, Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart and a protected first-round pick. Atlanta later used the pick's value in a rights chain associated with No. 21 Rajon Rondo in 2006, while Payton returned to Boston after being waived. Walker helped the Celtics immediately, supporting the inherited Even Trade grades of B each.

Cleveland acquired guard Jiří Welsch from Boston in February 2005. The Celtics received a future first-round pick later linked to No. 24 Rudy Fernández in 2007, plus the Cavaliers' agreement to remove protection on an earlier first-round obligation. Welsch's short Cleveland tenure was limited; Boston gained valuable draft leverage. The inherited Celtics Win awards Boston B+ and Cleveland C.

Charlotte acquired Malik Allen; cash from Miami Heat for Steve Smith.

Dallas received Keith Van Horn from Milwaukee Bucks and sent Alan Henderson; Calvin Booth; $250K cash in return.

Denver received Eduardo Najera; Luis Flores; 2007 first-round pick (top 7 protected) (#30-Petteri Koponen) from Golden State Warriors, sending Nikoloz Tskitishvili; Rodney White in return.

Golden State acquired Baron Davis for Speedy Claxton, Dale Davis and cash, gaining the star guard who ended a 13-year playoff drought and led the “We Believe” upset of 67-win Dallas.

The realized return strongly favored Houston: Houston received Moochie Norris; Vin Baker; 2006 second-round pick (#32-Steve Novak) from New York Knicks for Maurice Taylor.

Houston received Mike James and Zendon Hamilton from Milwaukee on February 24, 2005 for Reece Gaines and second-round picks in 2006 and 2007. The 2007 pick became No. 56 Ramon Sessions, who played for the Bucks during the following two seasons, while the 2006 pick became David Noel. James gave Houston an immediate guard during its 2005 playoff run but did not stay long. Bucks Win, Milwaukee A- versus Rockets B-.

Miami sent Malik Allen and cash to Charlotte on February 24, 2005, reacquiring former Heat draft choice Steve Smith. Smith played 13 Miami games, totaling 114 minutes and 23 points, while Allen played 22 Charlotte games, 271 minutes and 111 points. The Bobcats gained extra frontcourt coverage and money; Miami obtained a brief veteran reunion. Bobcats Win, Charlotte B- and Miami C.

76ers Win. Rogers gave Philadelphia usable veteran minutes, while Mashburn’s contract and health situation were absorbed without producing on-court value. Even that limited contribution exceeded New Orleans’ result because Robinson was waived only days after the trade and never appeared for the franchise. New Orleans was trying to move salary and unavailable veterans, so the transaction had financial and roster-management logic. Still, Robinson’s immediate waiver meant the basketball return was effectively nonexistent, making it hard to defend the old even-trade framing.

Golden State acquired Baron Davis from New Orleans for Speedy Claxton, Dale Davis and cash. Davis later powered the 2007 “We Believe” Warriors past 67-win Dallas and ended the franchise’s 13-year playoff drought, while the Hornets received little lasting basketball value.

New York holds a slight long-term edge because the return included Malik Rose plus first-round picks that became David Lee and Mardy Collins, while San Antonio received an immediate starting center in Nazr Mohammed who helped win the 2005 championship. The Spurs' title payoff keeps their grade high even though the Knicks captured more cumulative asset value.

Philadelphia acquired Chris Webber, Matt Barnes and Michael Bradley for Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner and Corliss Williamson. Webber remained productive enough to give the 76ers the best individual return, but knee limitations, salary and a short tenure prevented the deal from becoming a major win.

New Jersey sent Golden State second-round selections in 2005 and 2007 for veteran Clifford Robinson on February 14, 2005. The picks became Chris Taft at No. 42 and Stéphane Lasme at No. 46, while Robinson supplied New Jersey with depth through the 2006-07 season, including playoff minutes. Neither Warriors draftee established a comparable sustained rotation role. Nets Win: New Jersey A- and Golden State C.

Phoenix received veteran Walter McCarty and cash from Boston in February 2005. Boston received a second-round selection that later became associated with No. 49 Aaron Gray in 2007. McCarty gave Phoenix veteran perimeter-forward depth, while the pick's rights later passed through other hands. The inherited Even Trade credits each club C+.

Detroit acquired Carlos Arroyo from Utah Jazz for Elden Campbell; 2006 or later first round pick (lottery protected) (2006 #30-Joel Freeland).

New Orleans acquired Casey Jacobsen; Maciej Lampe; Jackson Vroman from Phoenix Suns for Jim Jackson; 2005 second round pick (#57-Marcin Gortat).

Orlando sent Cuttino Mobley and Michael Bradley to Sacramento for Doug Christie.

The partner finished with a modest edge. The Warriors acquired Zarko Cabarkapa from Phoenix Suns for second round pick (protected top 40 in 2005, top 38 in 2006, unprotected in 2007) (2007 #49-Aaron Gray); 2009 second round pick (#37-DeJuan Blair).
