2013 NBA Trades

Raptors Win: The deal is a classic example of a trade where the team receiving the famous scorer did not necessarily receive the better total package. Gay was good in Sacramento, so the Kings deserve a positive grade. Toronto improved its chemistry, added useful depth and later converted Vasquez into assets that helped define the franchise's next era. That cumulative value makes the Raptors the winner.

Minnesota acquired Luc Mbah a Moute while sending out Derrick Williams in the 2013-11-26 transaction with Kings.

On October 25, 2013, the Phoenix Suns acquired Emeka Okafor; first-round pick (protected top 12 in 2014, top 10 in 2015-19, unprotected in 2020) (2014 #18-Tyler Ennis) from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Marcin Gortat; Kendall Marshall; Shannon Brown; Malcolm Lee.

Milwaukee acquired Caron Butler while sending out Ish Smith; Viacheslav Kravtsov in the 2013-08-29 transaction with Suns.

Philadelphia 76ers came out ahead in the 2013-08-22 trade with Memphis, which received 2014 second-round pick (protected top 50 and 56-60, else extinguished) (not exercised); trade exception for Tony Wroten Jr.

Boston and Memphis exchanged Donte Greene and Fab Melo in August 2013. Greene never established a regular-season Celtics role, while the Grizzlies waived Melo without a substantive Memphis playing tenure. Both clubs exchanged fringe center/forward opportunities but received almost no on-court result. Even Trade, C+ for both.

Milwaukee acquired Brandon Knight, Khris Middleton and Viacheslav Kravtsov from Detroit in a sign-and-trade for Brandon Jennings.

Indiana acquired Luis Scola for an immediate title push, but Phoenix received a deeper long-term package built around Miles Plumlee and a future first-round pick.

On July 22, 2013, Dallas sent the rights to point guard Nick Calathes to Memphis in exchange for removal of the protection on a 2016 second-round pick previously owed by the Grizzlies. Calathes signed with Memphis and played 71 games in 2013-14 and 58 more in 2014-15, totalling 129 regular-season appearances and 590 points. Dallas improved the certainty of collecting a future second but acquired no immediate rotation player. The measurable return favors Memphis, B+, while Dallas receives C+ for its draft-asset protection adjustment.

On July 13, 2013, Houston sent Royce White, Furkan Aldemir's draft rights and cash to Philadelphia for a heavily protected 2014 second-round pick that never conveyed. Houston wanted room for its Dwight Howard signing and disposed of White's salary, while Philadelphia obtained a prospect that later gave it 41 games and nine starts in 2014-15. White did not appear in a Sixers regular-season game and was waived in October 2013. Slight 76ers Edge, Philadelphia B- for Aldemir and cash, Houston C for cap space rather than nonexistent pick production.

Boston sent Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and D.J. White to Brooklyn for five players, three first-round picks and a 2017 swap. The Nets reached the second round once before the veteran core dissolved. Boston used the 2016 pick on Jaylen Brown, converted the 2017 No. 1 asset into the No. 3 pick used on Jayson Tatum and moved the 2018 Nets pick in the Kyrie Irving trade. The Celtics win decisively.

Milwaukee Bucks received 2016 second round pick (more favorable of Kings (protected #56-60), Pelicans) (#36-Malcolm Brogdon); Bucks' option to swap 2019 second round picks with Kings (#42-Admiral Schofield). Sacramento Kings received Luc Mbah a Moute; Bucks' option to swap 2019 second round picks with Kings (#60-Vanja Marinkovic).

New Orleans acquired Jrue Holiday and Pierre Jackson's rights from Philadelphia for Nerlens Noel's rights and a 2014 first-round pick that became Elfrid Payton. Holiday developed into the Pelicans' two-way leader and later returned a major pick package. Philadelphia acquired two meaningful young assets, but New Orleans realized the greater direct and downstream value.

Golden State acquired Andre Iguodala through a three-team sign-and-trade, Utah received draft compensation for absorbing contracts, and Denver recovered Randy Foye plus a second-round pick for a departing free agent.

Houston won the Thomas Robinson salary-clearing trade while retaining multiple future assets.

New York surrendered a first-round pick, two second-rounders and useful veterans for Andrea Bargnani. Injuries and poor fit turned the deal into a clean long-term asset loss.

Atlanta obtained a 2015 second-round choice from Utah in the June 2013 draft in exchange for the rights to Brazilian point guard Raul Neto. The pick was later associated with No. 41 Pat Connaughton, whose NBA playing career largely occurred with teams other than Atlanta. Neto later appeared for Utah, giving the Jazz an NBA guard for the surrendered pick. The inherited Hawks Win has Atlanta B+ and Utah C-.

Atlanta traded the rights to Shane Larkin and cash to Dallas on draft night in 2013, taking Jared Cunningham and the draft rights to Lucas Nogueira and Mike Muscala. Muscala eventually developed into a useful Hawks reserve across several seasons, while Larkin's Dallas stay was brief. Atlanta gained stronger long-term roster utility.

Miami obtained the 2013 draft rights to James Ennis III from Atlanta for a protected future second-round pick. Ennis eventually appeared for the Heat in 2014-15 and supplied reserve wing minutes. The Hawks' incoming right later became the No. 46 selection in 2017, associated with Sterling Brown but subsequently directed elsewhere. Heat Win, Miami B+ and Atlanta C.

Boston obtained the draft rights to Colton Iverson from Indiana for cash on the night of the 2013 NBA draft. Iverson never appeared in an NBA regular-season game for the Celtics; Indiana received financial consideration rather than an incoming rotation player. The low-impact exchange is rated Even Trade with C+ grades on both sides.

Boston acquired the No. 13 draft rights to Kelly Olynyk from Dallas for No. 16 Lucas Nogueira rights and two future second-round selections in June 2013. Olynyk spent four seasons contributing to the Celtics, including a 26-point performance in the decisive 2017 playoff Game 7 versus Washington. Dallas gained a package of draft choices and later routed rights elsewhere, but Boston obtained the stronger direct playing contribution.

Cleveland acquired 2015 second round pick (#53-Sir'Dominic Pointer) and 2016 second round pick (#48-Paul Zipser) for rights to Allen Crabbe, with the completed returns remaining broadly comparable.

Dallas received draft rights to Ricky Ledo from Philadelphia 76ers and sent 2014 second-round pick (#47-Russ Smith) in return.

Denver received Darrell Arthur; rights to Joffrey Lauvergne from Memphis Grizzlies, sending Kosta Koufos in return.

Denver received rights to Erick Green; cash from Utah Jazz, sending rights to Rudy Gobert in return.

Golden State took Malcolm Lee and No. 26 Andre Roberson rights from Minnesota on June 27, 2013, for its 2014 second-rounder and cash. The Warriors immediately sent Roberson to Oklahoma City for Archie Goodwin's rights plus cash and then sent Goodwin and Lee to Phoenix for No. 30 Nemanja Nedović. Nedović played 24 NBA games for Golden State. Minnesota used its 2014 No. 53 selection on Alessandro Gentile and then sold his rights to Houston for cash. The direct modest outcomes support Even Trade, C+ both.

Golden State acquired rights to Archie Goodwin; cash from Oklahoma City Thunder for rights to Andre Roberson.

The partner finished with a modest edge. The Warriors acquired rights to Nemanja Nedovic from Phoenix Suns for Malcolm Lee; rights to Archie Goodwin.

Milwaukee acquired rights to Nate Wolters while sending out rights to Ricky Ledo; 2014 second round pick (#54-Nemanja Dangubic) in the 2013-06-27 transaction with 76ers.

Minnesota traded Trey Burke's draft rights to Utah for the rights to Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng.

Oklahoma City received rights to Grant Jerrett and sent cash. The realized return clearly favored Oklahoma City.

On June 27, 2013, Washington Wizards acquired rights to Glen Rice Jr. from Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for rights to Nate Wolters; rights to Arsalan Kazemi.

Mavericks Win. Atlanta Hawks earns C+; Dallas Mavericks earns B. Both clubs acquired an NBA-caliber reserve, but Morrow's distinctive outside shooting supplied a clearer single offensiv

Boston acquired scorer Jordan Crawford from Washington for center Jason Collins and injured guard Leandro Barbosa on February 21, 2013. Crawford supplied scoring in Boston and later became a trade component, while Barbosa did not play for Washington because of an ACL injury and Collins had limited Wizards minutes. Boston gained the stronger basketball return.

Charlotte acquired Josh McRoberts from Orlando Magic for Hakim Warrick.

On February 21, 2013, Philadelphia acquired guard Charles Jenkins and cash from Golden State in return for a protected second-round selection. Jenkins played 12 76ers games, starting once and totaling 150 minutes; the pick never conveyed. Golden State did receive financial savings by moving Jenkins, which prevents treating its return as literally nothing. 76ers Win narrowly, Philadelphia C+ and Warriors C.

Golden State sent center Jeremy Tyler to Atlanta for cash and unspecified future considerations on February 21, 2013. Tyler played one Hawks NBA game, logging five minutes and collecting three rebounds before Atlanta waived him March 6. Golden State received financial relief in a series of deadline salary transactions, with no documented later draft selection from this agreement. Warriors Win narrowly, Golden State C+ and Atlanta D+.

The long-term value clearly favored Phoenix Suns: Houston received 2013 second-round pick (#34-Isaiah Canaan) from Phoenix Suns for Marcus Morris.

Memphis came out ahead in the 2013-02-21 trade with Miami Heat, receiving Dexter Pittman; 2013 second-round pick (#60-Janis Timma); cash for rights to Ricky Sanchez.

Orlando sent J.J. Redick, Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith to Milwaukee for Tobias Harris, Beno Udrih and Doron Lamb. Redick stayed only for the remainder of a first-round exit, while Harris became a productive young scorer and the clear best long-term asset, making this a decisive Magic win.

New York acquired 2014 second round pick (#59-Xavier Thames); cash from Thunder for Ronnie Brewer. New York received useful value, but the partner side finished with the better overall return.

Oklahoma City received rights to Giorgos Printezis; cash and sent Eric Maynor. The completed outcome is close enough to support an even evaluation.

On February 21, 2013, Toronto acquired Sebastian Telfair from Phoenix Suns in exchange for Hamed Haddadi; second-round pick (less favorable of the 2014 Kings pick protected Nos. 56-60 and the Raptors pick protected top 36, otherwise a 2015 second-round pick more favorable of the Raptors and Suns picks; 2014 No. 48, Lamar Patterson).

The long-term value clearly favored Sacramento Kings: Houston received Thomas Robinson; Francisco Garcia; Tyler Honeycutt from Sacramento Kings for Patrick Patterson; Cole Aldrich; Toney Douglas.

Memphis moved Rudy Gay and received Tayshaun Prince, Ed Davis, Austin Daye and a second-round pick while reducing payroll and sharpening the roster around Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Conley. The Grizzlies reached the 2013 Western Conference finals immediately.

Cleveland acquired Marreese Speights, Josh Selby and 2 additional assets for Jon Leuer and $6.4M trade exception, producing a clear Cavaliers win on realized player, draft and roster value.
